Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The latest chapter concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise started the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each member has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could assist the party enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This means them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
